Drive It Like You Stole It - PCs in WutC
I’ve been playing OllieDog’s excellent Wolves Upon the Coast game and I’ve been having a blast. Now most of that is due to Ollie’s excellent GM skills and the other players creating a fun table. However, I got to give it up for the Boast mechanic.
My first PC was named Slode and lasted half a session before dying to ancient Bog Mummy. He was replaced by the hastily named Foot Twoman, a fighting man the local Lord had sent as help, who came with a whopping 1 HP. I expected 2Man to die that session as well, as I’ve expected him to die every session since.
However since then he’s accomplished 4 boasts, led the stake team to kill the Bog Mummy that killed Slode and several other Dawgs, won an archery tournament in Blulach, baited the Christians while in one of their major cities, and now wields an ancient man killing spear he inherited from another True Dawg, Llwd.
2Man now has a healthy 7 HP, +6 attack bonus, a fine bow, and the aforementioned spear. He’ll be able to attract at least one companion the next time he is in a suitable settlement. If anything I should be playing him more conservatively, letting hired help and NPCs take the hits. But that’s not what the Boast mechanic encourages.
Instead I’m trying to catch the eye of a Cut Tooth currently traveling with the party. Llwd gambled with his life for a chance to become one and I plan on doing the same. I’m on the hunt for a boast worthy of a Cut Tooth. Even more than wealth, Foot 2Man seeks either glory or death.
Not that I’m playing him to be suicidal. He’ll still run when out numbered, he’d be more than happy to cut an enemies’s throat while they sleep, and he’s generally trying to be the sneakiest, most cunning Mother Fucker he can be. But when the proper opportunity for fame presents itself he’ll take it.
Every session with Foot Twoman is a gift and in the end the most I can hope for him is a death worthy of a True Dawg.
